GEORGE V MEMORIAL

Mayor Makes Appeal To - Hastings People QU0TA NOT YET REACHED "I feel that on the eve of the glorious May 12, tixe date of the coronation of His Gracious Majesty, it is appropriate that I should make a further appeal for contributioxxs to the K-ing George the Fifth Memorial Fund," says the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, in a statement to the Herald-Tribune. "I am compelled," he adds, "to mention that the contributions «o far received fall far short of this district 'e quota, and I believe that our men and women, our girls and boys, our conxmercial and industrial institutions and unions, are now desirous of paying a tribute in £ e d to the memory of our late beloved Sovereign. "The memorial, which is sponsored by the Prime Minister, is to take thf form of permanent health camps for children, thus symbolising the example oi' a great and kindly King in his love of open-air life and his interest in the well-being of the youth of the Empire. It is eurely an opportunity for everyone to express gratitude for his beneficent reign. Rather thau commemorate his work in bronze or in monnments, it is in keepxng With King George 's lifa that his memory should be perpetuated in the way suggested. "In seeking your flnancial support in buiilding up this fund, I make this very earnest appeal to you all to again show that Hastings and district can and will stand side by side with the rest of New Zealand in its willingness to show its full appreciation of the life of his late Majesty, and as a manifestatiou of our loyalty," Mr Maddison says. ."The memorial itself is a most worthy one, and it will give health and joy to so many of our young citizens. "Might I request that all donations, however small or large, be made at onee, so that, df possible, this district '$ quota shall be subscribed by- Coronation Day. Contributions may be made to the Town, Clerk, the Herald-Tribune, or myself. May I appeal oo firms to open up subscription lists so that eraployees may have an opportunity of helping this worthy cause. "Mrs T. H. Lowry, President of the New Zealand Eed Cross Society, who r.s keenly interested in the purpose of this memorial. desires to be associated with my appeal and to urge upon all citizens their duty of demonstrating in a pract:cal way their loyalty to the Throne and their affection fov the late King George V."
