TRAINS TO WAIROA

-Prese Asaoelation.)

Line Will Be Opened By December

(By T«l«grsph-

BLENHEIM, Last Night. "It will be interesting to see which of the tifo lines, Gisborne or the South maiu trunk, will be ready first. As far as I can sea it will be about » dead heat," said Mr. E. P. Meachen, M.P., when commenting on the progress being made on the Napier-Gisborne line of which he has just made a four days' inspection at the instance of the Minister of Public Works. Mr. Meachen is of opinion that service trains will be running to Wairoa from Napier by August at the latest and the line will be open for general traffic to that point by the end of the year. The distance to be completed on the Gisborne line is less than what is required to put the South main trunk in oppration, but that is more than made up for by the rough country which had to be travereed. Although excellent progress is being made and will be acbelerated vthen the more up-to-date equipment on order has arrived on the job, Mr. Meachen thought the final stage of having the lines in full working order would be just about the same time in both Islands. Mr. Meachen 's inspection of the line was made to inform the Minister of the general progress being made with special consideration to the organisation and methods and possibilities of expediting the work.
