N.Z.'s First Game of Tour IMPRESSIVE START

(Bv Telegraph—

F'onvristht.)

LONDON, May 9. The match between New Zealand and Surroy began at the Oval. Surrey won the tos sand batted on a wicket that was soft and easy. The special correspondent of the United Press Association with the team Bays: "The New Zealanders impressively opened their tour by dismissing one of the strongest county sides in three hours on an excellent wicket through steady bowling supported by keen fielding. It Was dull and chilly weather. The county unexpeetedly lost five of their best batsmen for 90 in two hours mainly through the vicious hostility of the spin bowling of Gallichan, whose predunch figurfes were 15 overs, 7 i maidens, 19 runs, 4 wickets. He secured two wickets With successive balls. Boberts, whose steadiness was admirable, captured two wickets quiclily i after lunchj. while Cowie in a fine speli of fast bowling dismissed the tail, also taking two Wickets with successive j balls. Frequent applause from the erowd, j aumbering 3000, rewarded the faultless . fielding. The vulnerability of the early touring batsmen to the express bowler, ■ G-over, was relieved by the tradesman- | like display of Kerr, who batted for 80 I minutes and redeemed by the courageous stand of Carson and Donnelly, the young left-handers vyho saved the side by determinedly adding 67 before they were separated. At a difficult time Oarson resolutely defied the attack for a hundred minutes. He hit eight fours. Donnelly, who was watehfully careful, batted well and hit four fours. Dunning and Hadlee, who are suffer* ing from slight colds, and Lamason and Weir were omitted from the New Zealand team. Scores:-— • SUEEEY. First Innings. Knight, b Eoberts *. 7 "Sandham, stpd.
