It gave hina great pleaSure to present the cup, "which had been donated by Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, and Mr J. S. They were two of the most Btaunch supporters of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, and had stuek to the club during the lean years. * The race just run was the fiftieth eontest since it had been calLed the Hawke's Bay Cup, and it had produced a splendid race. The Hawke's Bay Cup had in years gone by brought together the best horses in New Zealand. and had been oue of the most important races in the Dominion. He hoped this year's race would bo the turning point and that the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club would again become oue of the leading racing bodiea in the Dominion, and the Hawke's Bay Cup oue of the most important racing events. The race had been won by a local owner, and one who was known everywhere for his nprightness, and his win was a popular oue.

In congratulating Mr Hennah on his win he had also to congratulate him as the trainer, for Mr Hennah trained his own horse, and all who knew that training played an important part in racing success. Mrs G. D. Beatson, wife of the prosidont, then presented the cup to the winning owner. Cheers were then given for the owner, ridfir (G. Tattersalll and donors of the cup. Mr Hennah briefly returned thanks. Owing to the events being run wqll behind the scheduled starting time, the last race was not run until five o'clock, when visibility was very poor. The stables of Messrs H. S. Greene, Greenmeadows, and G. W. B. Greene, Hastings, were the most successful, cach having two wins. • The totalisator handled £11,452 for the day, as compared with £7263 for the corresponding day last year, being an increase of £4189. The most heav-ily-backed race was the Hawke's Bay Cup, when £2669 was put through the machine, This represents the largest amount invested on any single race for many years. Details of the running of' the concluding events are a® under: — HAWKE'S BAY CUP. Of £300, and gold cupj 1£ mile. 7 PADISHAH— Mr J. A. Hennah 's br.g., 6yrs., by Chief Ruler — Caress, 7.10 (G. Also started: 3 Big Dook 9.0 (C. Shields), 9 Werojria 8.1U (P. Burgess), 4 Catalogue 8.6 (S, Wilson), 10 Pladie 8.4 (B. H. Morris), 8 Master Cyklon 8.4 (A. Jenkins), 5 Pakanui 8.2 (C. (J. Forsyth), 12 Soho 7.7 (R. Marsh), 13 Passion Flower 7.7 (H. Callahan), 6 Gharade 7.7 (H. Wiggins). All fourteen . acceptors for the Hawke's Bay Cup were saddled up. The horses created a favourable dmpression as they paraded around the birdcage and walked down the straight to do Iheir preliminary. It was a fitting field to mark tho occasion of tho golden jubilee Of the cup race. The field got away well, and came down the straight in line. When they had settled down in their running positions Pakanui 's colours were the first to be seen out in front, followed by Mandamus, Haut Monde, Werohia, Catalogue, Passion Flower and King 's Lancer, while Soho was chasing tho team out of the straight. In the next furlong a cliange was effected, Catalogue taldng over command from Passion Flower, Pakanui, King's Lancer, Mandamus, Gay Boy, Charade, Big Dook and Padishal), Haut Monde receiving a slight clieck going past the caretaker 's cottngo, Passion Flower

Lancer Haut Monde, Charade and Padishah wore handy. Soho was still the whipporin. At tho half-mile bend King's Lancer and Passion Flower were the pucemakere, with Gay Boy in third position, just in front of Catalogue, who was beginning to drift, Mandamus, Haut Monde, Big Dook, and Padishah. From here to the entrance to the straight tho big field began to elose up, and it was a pretty sight as they rau down the High School bend and into the straight, as at this point there was not a horse that could not be said to possess a winning chance. Passion Flower and King's Lancer were still doing their duty as pacemakers when they straightened up, with Catalogue just ahead of Haut Monde, Gay Boy, and Big Dook, while the ultimate winner was about seventh or eighth, but gradually putting in his bid. Down the straight the two pacemakers began to weaken, and the first to take the lead ofE them was Gay Boy, and at the distance the Manawatu gelding was being proclaimed the winner when Padishah began his devaetating rnn. Inside the distance the cheering began for Padishah, and in a splendid finish Mr Hennah 's gelding got up to win by a long head, with a length back to Haut Monde. Mandamus was fourth, and Passion Flower, who ran a surprisdngly • good race, fifth. Time, 2.6 1-5. NURSERY HANDICAP. Of £100; 5i furlongs. 1 THE CROONER — Mr T. H. From a fair despatch Lindrum first hi.t the front, with Knightsbridge, Money Raid and The Crooner not far away, .but the latler, in the next halffurlong, appeared to get a bump and he went well back. Round the top turn he was fourth, but weli back .from Lindrum, Money Raid and Felicitatiou, while Son and Heir was in behind The Crooner and just ahead of Mary Rose. Lindrum was still there turning for home from Felicitatiou, Money Raid and The Crooner, but from here the latter began his run and easily colleeting those ahead of him went on for an easy win by. one and a-half lengths. while Lindrum was a similar distance ahead of the third horse, Son and Heir. Felicitatiou was fourth. Time, 68 3-5. HERETAUNGA HANDICAP. Of £100; 9 furlongs.

Agog was first in front, and Jbc piloted the field out . of the straight from Parry, Black Fox, Umpire, and Lucullus Lad. Into the back stretch Agog still held the lead over Parry, Black Fox, Lucullus Lad, Tupaij Umpire and Trailer. The latter improved his position dn the next two furlongs, as' rounding the four-furlong bend ne was in fourth position behind Agog, P§rry and Black Fox, while just after Trailer came Tupai and Blue Garter, with Lucullus Lad going back to near the rear of the field. Bef ore the straight was reached Parry had assumed the lead just ahead of Agog, Black Fox. and Trailer, with Hamarin well back but cQmiag up gradually. In the run to the judge's box Hamarin finished very strongly to take first money from the favourite, Black Fox, by a neck, with half a length back to Agog. Trailer, who did not finish as well as expected, ran a moderate fourth. Time. 1.55,

This race was run in the dark, and as well as could be distinguished Blygain was actually first out from Contact and Lavina, but very shortly Hunter 's Morn came past the leaders with a rush that carried him well to the fore by the time the half-mile post was reached, and never seriouely troubled he eontinued on to win by two aud a'-half lengths from Blygain, with Sir Nigel two lengths furthor back i third and Wananga fourth, Time, 1,18.
