J, List is May 8, for on that day in 1923 he commenced service -as ' a cadqt at the Hastings Courthouse. * Now, just 14 years later; he enters on ,a new era, having bepn appointed clerk of the court at Opotiki, and in company with his wife and family left Hastings by car this morning for that town. Yesterday afternoon Mr List was the reeipaent of two presentationS| and the goodwili was expressed of a host oi peopie with ' whom he has been associated in an oiiicial capacity during the time he has been in Hastings. M. Will, pointed out that Mr List hgd served practically pne-third of the service expected by the department in Hastings, and during that time the speaker had b&d every opportunity pf judging Mr List's fiharacter. "I have found hioi a very capable, courteous aad pbligiag qffieer, both to the public and to the sqlicitors, ' ' said Mr Will. "I have fonnd hinr of the greatest aesistance in the office, and during the time he has been here we have had five genpral electi°U9| dqring whjch he has bepn a wqnderful staadhy? Then again he ha§ been ever ready to assist me personally by undertaking work fhat was '»ot altogether within hj§ proyinqe, buf he has done it with the best of spirit, Mr Will went on to eongratuiate Mr List pn his promotion and expressed pleasure that the department had recognised his capabilities in the manuer it had. He fejt confident that Mr List woiild capably fill his new responsible pfficp apd wqnld 4n a years move 011 to opo pf fhe larger offiees. * '■ Though it means a promotion to you'w® are sorry that yqu have to leave us,^ said Mr Will, "but we would ask you to accept these two small gifts as tokens of our great appreciatiou of your service aud good fellowship while associated with us, and we wish you aud your wife and family evor-y euccess and huppiuess in the future,"
Other speakers who endorsed these remarks were Senior-Sergeant G. Sivyer, Constables B. Farquharson, E. Gibbs, and W* H Craigie, Messrs E^ H. Oulyer and J. O. Kelly. Mr List briefly expressed his thanks and apprqciation. Later in the afternoon Mr Ljst was niet by representatives of thq Iqw clerks pf Hastings and presented witij an insciibpd fquhtnin pen. In handing the gift to him, Mr L. Heaton said that he anj his assficiqtes had always fqund Mr List pf great assistance, and he had alwfty? givpn the qtmbst cpurtesy and attentioii. "We are sorry you qre leaving ijs, but WC cpngratulate you on your promptipn and ask you to accept this emall token of the esteem in which we hold you and also as a remindpr of the very pleasant assoeiar tions you liacl rvith us," cputinuecl Mr Heafon.
