YEAR'S RANKING USTS QUIST AHEAD OF McGBATH There are two placlngs in the ranking lists just announced by the Australian Association of Australia's players that may cause discussion. Quist is ranked ahead of McGrath, who is Australian champion, and Mrs. Westacott is placed ahead of MJss Hartigan. The flgure denotes last year's grading. The Men: A. K. Quist (S.A.) 1, V. B, McGrath (N.S.W.) 5, J. H, Crawford (N.S.W.) 2, J. E. Bromwich (N.S.W.) 3, H. C. Hopman (Vic.) equal 3, L. A. Schwartz (S.A.) equal 8, D. P. Turnbull (S.A.), D. P. Thompson (N.S.W.) 10, J. E. Harper (Vic.) not graded, A. A. Kay (Vic.) 6. The Women: Miss N. Wynne (Vic.) 3, Miss T. Coyne (N.S.W.) equal 1, Mrs. V. Westacott (Qld.) not graded, Miss J. Hartigan (N.SW.) equal 1, Mrs. Hopman (Vic.) 4,. Miss D. Stevenson (Vic.) equal 6, Miss M. Wllson (Vic.) not graded, Miss M. Blick (Vic.) 5, Miss V. Selwin (N.S.W.) not graded, Miss M. Hardcastle (Qld,) equal 10, Mrs. M. Molesworth (Qld.) was not ranked last year because of insufflcient performances. Quist's performances during the European tour of the Davis Cup team were far ahead of McGrath's. But since they came back McGrath has proved better than Quist. If the ranking is mainly on last year's form Quist must go first, If on the form of this year the reverse. 1 The fact that McGrath holds the Australian title may impress many; but one has never regarded this as final. As to Mrs. • Westacott going ahead of Miss Hartigan I cannot agree at all. I have the greatest admiration for the play of the Queensland "Cyclone." She is far more than a cyclone; but she has not quite regained the form she showed against the English team three years back. Miss Hartigan's performances are still betr ter than those of the Queensland champion.-
