THE SETTLEMENT OF MAHORA
Cutting-Up of the Frimley Estate RESULT OF BALLOT OF 1899
0NE of the most important first steps j in the eloser settlement of the area surrounding the borough of Hastings was the cutting-up of that portion of Mr J. N, Williams's property now known as Mahora. This part of the estate was disposed of to the Government at a price thought to have been about £26 an acre. The land was then balloted for. It was not till about 191'3 that the remainder of the Frimley pro-" perty was sold. The subdivision of the Mahora block undoubtedly contributed in a great degree to the building-up of Hastings as a large inland town centred upon some of the finest land in the Dominion. There are still vast possibilities for expansion in the establishment of further industries and greater development of the disi^ict's resourees for the raising of primary produets. The Mahora block, when it was disposed of by Mr Williams to the Government, was subdivided into suitablegized allotments which would permit of cropping and dairying to be cairried. on either with ^fruifcgr owing or until such time ag orchards became profit-bearing. The ballot for these sections was held on Mareh 26, 1899, the land having been subdivided into thirty-five sections. For some of these there were only a few applieants, for some only one applieation. In the latter case the sections were allotted to the only applieants.
