ICE-CREAM IN 80'S
Marvellous "American Inven« tion" — or Was It? It will surprise many people to know. that it was apparently poseible fifty years ago to make ice-cream at home. An advertisement in the Hastings' Star cf Septemberj 1886, announced an "Improved American' Ice-making Maehinei for makdng clear, transparent ica, with. an everlasting freezing crystal, that will make ices from day to day without" entailing the destruction of the crystals, as in all other freezing machinea now in use." The advertisement went on lto say that "the above machine is most 1 simple for making ice-creams, ica* puddings, etc., they being made ready moulded for the table in six with ice and salt." The price of these machines was £8 10/- for a pint size, £3 15/- for a quart size. Tho "inexhaustible freezing crystals " were £1 10/- a tin. A cabinet ref rigerator for meat, butter, fruit, ete^, could be had for 27/6. Perhaps adven tising was not as truthful then as it ii to-day. A machine that would do- all that was claimed for this "AmericaS invention" wonld nowadays be aaf effective competitor for the gleaminj and effective electrfc refrigerator,-
