Board and lodging was cheap in Hastings in 1886. An advertisenient appearing in the Hastings Star in September of that year announced the opendng of a boarding-hoti.se by L. M. Schaeffer (late cook at Te Mata). All meals were ninepence and beds one shilling, and the weekly tariff 16/-. This boardin£-house for many years was one of the leading hostelries in Hastings.
