SUCCESSION TO THE THRONE
Prdcr of Royal Precedence at Court IADIES OF THE FAMILY Soon after King George and Queen Elizabeth ascended the Throne a curious position arose with regard to the ■uccesaion. While most people accept•d Princess Elizabeth as heir presumptive to the Throne, certain important Jegsl authoritiea held tlxat her sister, Princess Margaret Rose, was co-equal jrith her. It was suggeated that a special Act «£ Parliament might be necessary to esfablish the elder Princess' s prior right. Poubt was not cleaxed up until the Home Secretary annonnced that the Govemment had investigated the legal position, which showed that Princess Elizabeth was indeed sole heir, Shotild a &on be born to Their Majesfies, he would, of course, be heir apparent. At present the order of succession to the Throne is as follows: — 1. Princess Elizabeth. 2. Princess Margaret Rose, 8. Duke of Gloncester. 4. Puke of Kent. 5. Prince Edwax'di * (Duke of Rent's 6. Princess Royal. 7. Lord Lascelles. 8. Hon. Gerald Lascelles (sons of Princess Royal). II iha Puke of Gloncester had a son, Phis child would succeed bfefore his ■ncle, the Duke of Kent. Precedence among the ladies of the Poyal Family takes a somewhat difjferent order from that of the succession. Quvn Mary eomes immediately after Que^ Elizabeth. Next stand the two little PrinceBses, followed by their aunt, the Princess Royal. The Duchesses of Gloncester •nd Kent come sixfch and seventh, srhile the infant Prinoess Alexandra of Kent is now eigktb lady of the land.
