"UNFAIR COMMENT"

Councillor Foreman, in epeaking on a question of privilege, referred to two articles which nppeared in the Hawke's Bay Herald of June 13 and July 9 respectively, in which, he considered, the proceedings of the council *had. been commented on iu an unfair and improper manner by the writer, who was the Hastings correspondent of the paper. He would therefore move that the vmter of the article referred to be requested to apologise, failing which ho would be excluded frora the meetings of the council. The iaotion was seconded by Cr. . McEwan. The council divided on the quSStl'on. The motion was dcclared to be carried. — From the Hastings Borough Council minutes, August 7., 1888. The sequel to this incident ^as interesting. At the next meeting Ihe council received a letter from Mr H. B. Murdoch acknowledging receipt of a letter from the council demanding an apology. His letter was "received." The very next itein on the order paper, a letter from the returning oificer, advised that Mr H. H. Murdoch had beeu elected to a vacancy on the council.
