McLeod occupying'the presidency, the chamber did a grpat deal towards securing improvemnts in borough and district affairs. Mr. H. W. C. Baird is th present p'resident and Mr. V. A. Thempeon is the secfctary. Some twelve months ago/a Hastings and District Progress League was formed, 3'he league aims to bring together those eitizens infcerested in developlng sohemes for qdvancing Hastings as a oon\inercial eentre and Havelock North as a residential suburb. The Progress League wo'rks in conjunction with the IJawke'B Eay Development League, Mr. 6. E. C. Bog8ra acting as seeretary of both bodies. Tke Development League, by the raising of funds and by its ipfluenge in Government quarters, was largely responsible for a comprehensive neriabmapping apd soil survey of the provinee belng undertaken. The Hastings Eotary Clab,.forrned ip 1924, has also cont'ributed much to the creatiou of sound citlzenship.
