FIRST JOCKEY CLUB

Came Into Being at Meeting In 1874 The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, as a club, came into being on Friday,November 20, 1874. Before that, race meetings had been held under different auspices, and a club styled a jockey club, but which seemed to have no clearly-defined status, had also held race meetings. The need for a properlvconstituted club was greatly felt, and* meeting was convened by several men interested in racing for the purpose of forming the club. This meeting was held in the Provineial Council Ghambers, Napier, on Friday, November 20, 1874, with Mr John Buchanan, M.P.C., in the chair. Among the other sportsmen present were Messrs Hunter, Henrv Powdrell, Ulick Burke, C. B. Winter,

R. D. Maney, G. H. Swan, G. Ellis, W. Mayo, W. Ford, W. Britten, H. O. Caulton, and G. F. Gillman. ■II The honorary treasurer.of the Race OJub funds, and of previous Joekey Club funds, although uot present, submitted a statement showang a credit balanee of nearly £300, which would be available as the nucleus for any properly-constituted club which mlght be formed. On the motion of Mr W. Mayo,

seconded by: Mr, ,H. Caulton, it waa decided. to fonn a club to be called tha Hawke's Bay- Joekey Club. The annual eubscription was fixed at two guineas, with an entrance fee« of one guinea. m. provisional committee was formed, consisting of Messrs Buchanan, Burke, Maney, Winter, Powdrell, Ellis and Swan, to arrange details and call a further meeting at which the proposal could be confirmed. * At this meeting, which was even. more largely attended than the first, considerable enthusiasm was showm Major W. Routledge was appointed honorary secretary, Mr F, Sutton honorary treasurer and the following members of the committee: Messrs Danvers, Maney, Ellis, Swan, Mayo, Buchanan and H. O. Caulton. A motion was carried to draw up xules and submit these to a late* meeting for approval. It was decided to hold the first .rac# meeting in March, 1875.
