Heretaunga Street Was Once Victoria Street Until the formation of the Borough Council in Hastings, the present main thoroughfare, Heretaunga street, was known as the Haveloek-Omahu road. The first minute-book of the council records that on Wednesday, October 20, 1886, Cr. McLeod gave notice that he would move at the next meeting: "That the portion of the Haveloek-Omahu road .within the borough be called Heretaunga street. ' ' At the next meeting, on Novembbr 4, 1886, however, a motion moved by Cr. MeLeod was carried naming the street Vietoria street. At a meeting on December 16 of the same year, though, Cr. Farmer, seconded by Cr. WiUiams, moved: "That the street rfeeently named Victoria street be renamed Heretaunga road." The motion was carried, and! the name has not been altered since.
