THE "TWELVE APOSTLES"
"The Twelve Apostles" is the name used to describe xne settlers who originally purchased the Heretaunga block from the Hawke 's Bay Maoris. Their names, and even their number, have become a little eonfused in the course of time. Actually the syndicate numbered seven. Heretaunga was divided into twelve portions; there were never twelve owners. The "apostles" were: — Mr. Thomas Tanner; three shares. Mr* J. N. Williams; two shares. Captain {later Sir) William Russell; two shares. Captain Gordon; two shares. Mr. (later the Hon.) J. D. Ormond; one share. Mr; Purvis Russell; one share. Mr* S. B. Brathwaite; one share. Mr. Tanner had Riverslea; Mr. Wiliiams, Frimley; Captain Russell, Flaxmere; Mr. Ormond, Karamu; and Captain Gordon, Fernhill. Subsequently Captain Russell acquired Mr. Purvis Russell's share, Captain Kenrick Hill went into partnership with Captain Gordon, and Mr- Tanner acquired Mr. Brathwaite 's share, giving him 1,250 wethers for it. Captain Russell disposed of. one of his shares to Mr. Andrew Hamilton Russell.
