STRAWBERRY BARRELS

For small gardens whieh cannot a-f ford the room to cultivate a straw berry patch this novel idea may prov.. attractive. Splendid crops may be oL tained and one" of the obvious advan tage oi this method is that the barrej | may be stood iu the warmest corner o± the garden, produeing berries four weeks earlier than usual, and saving the trouble of making the orthodox bed. The barrel should be as large as possible and scraped clean of oi'l or paint staios. Bore one dozen holes in the bottora for drainage, covering the holes with 5in. or 6in. of broken bricks or small pebbles. To protect the barrel from rotting it should be stood ou three bricks and a series of holea 5in. in diameter should be bored around the sides oi the barrel 15in. apart. The barrel is then filled with a mix ture of good soil, sand, wood ashes and manure. As the filling proceede; strong rooted runners should be set in each side hole. When the barrel is filled with soil, more runners may be planted cn the ctop 1ft, apjirt. If this method is carried out properly 25 plants may be grown in each barrel.
