An old Eskimo triek recently helped natiyea turn baek wolf packs which repeatedly stampoded 30QQ reindeer -being driven across 500. miles of Aretic wasteland to hunger-stricken Barter Island Chnnks of frdzen tallow were droppea for the pursuing wolves to snap up. Inside each chunk tbe Eskimos bad bent a 6-inch piece of wbalebone, sbarpened to needle point. Wben tbe tallow melts the wbalebone springs open, piercing the woives' stomacbs, and slow' death is tbeir fate. Deer from tbe Barter Island drive were taken from tho Point Barrow herd. Several hundred natives and a few whites were reported uear utarvatioii in ihe Barter Island area. Griswald Collilis, a veteran game warden, sent from JunOau to try to destroy the wolf packs, said he boiiev-' ed the Eskimo method would prove ef- , fective.
