Mr. Peter McLean
WAIPUKUEAU, May «. The death of Mr. Peter McLean, which occurred on Tuesday, marked the loss to Hawke's. Bay of one of its oldest and most highly respected pioneers, a resident of over 70 years' standing. , • Born in Inverness, Scotland, Mr. McLean, who :was 87 years of age, came to New Zeaiand in 1865 in the sailing ship Berar. After landing,' he was empleyed on . Maraekakaho station, later taking up farming . at . Paki Paki, from whence he removed to Central Hawke's Bay where he had resided for over 50 years. The late Mr. McLean was a member of -the old Hawke's Bay Militia,' and although he was not engaged in fEe Maori War, he could relate many stirring incidents which took place during those troublous times. In 1877 he married Elixa, dauighter of Samuel Collins, who predeceased him 12 years ago. The marxiage, was the first to be celebrated in the Havelock North Presbyterian Church, the ceremony being performed by Eev. M. Shepherd. Although taking no active part in public affairs, 'Mr. McLean was an ardent supporter of the Presbyterian Chnrch. Possessing a sterling and upright character and being of a kindiy and cheerful disposition, ; Mr. McLean was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and he will be greatly miss'ed by a wide circle of friends. Left to mourn the loss of a devoted father are eight daughters, Mrs. W. Petersen .(Waipukurau), Mrs. W. Cochrane (Waipukurau), Mrs. G. A. Devonport (Eketahuna), Mrs. G. A. Trevalyan (Taradale), Mrs. F. W. Syder (Hatuma), Misses Ida, May and Hilda McLean (Waipukurau).
