Bright Displays in Opening Tournament PROMISING MATERIAL
(By
The hockey season in Napier was commenced on Saturday, April 24, with a tournament, in which several teams gave promising displays. Technical Old Girls won the ladies ' A .gYade competition, with Napier and Te Awa equal. There was little to choose between any of the teams, and as there have been some ehanges in both the Napier and Te Awa teams, it may take a few games to see them at their best. , Kiwis are the strongest club numerically among the men'e clubs, and they are wisely encouraging their ; juniors as much as possible. They played two promoted juniors in the senior competition, which . they won, and both of . these playe»rs gave. a good account of themselves, C. Hronk being prominent in ihe scoring line, and his fast follow-
ing up.in the circle is a great asset to his side. The Kiwis played two teams in the junior section, and. they played eff for first honours, victory going to the B team. Some of the players in both teams are riew, who should iffiprove a lot with coaching. The aim of the club is to give all of their members some games during the season, so tnat there may be one or two ehanges dn the teams as the season prbgresses. Wallis., late of Feilding, one of the valued members of the .Hockey Referees' Assoeiation, donned the red jersey for Taradale in the opening games of the season. Wallis is ostensibly playing to get down in condition a little, but he showed that he has not
i'orgotten how to play hockey, and has inclusion will- strengthen the Taradale team, which has had another welcome additioxv to its ranks in the person oi Allsopp," a newcomer to the district. Scinde were without some of their last season 's players, and gave only a mediocre showing against Scinde. Wavatahs are an improved tqam, bul their combination can still be greatly improved. Several play a good individual game, but are inclined too much to roving. Opening of Competitions. On Saturday last the opening of the competitions saw much the same. teams standing out and rosults were much the same as in the tournament on the previous .Satnrday. In the women 's senior games Napier turned ihe tables on 'Technical Old Girls who were scarcely. as aggvessive as on the previous Saturday. The score, one . goal in favour of ' Napier, was a correct ondication of the evenness of the play.
Kiwi seniors had an easy win against Scinde, and the forward line of the Blues played a fine combined game, and were well supported by a very good set of backs. Taradale played a vastly improved I game to the showing made by them in j the tou'rnament matches the previous week, and they have only to maintaiu the same form to be serious contenders for the senior championship at the end !."• of the season, . --
| The Kiwi B junior team played a good game against Scinde juniors, who ! were weak in the forward line. Visit of Indiaus. At the annual meeting of" the New Zealand Hockey Assoeiation a deeision 1 to invite a team from the Indian | Hockey Federation to visit New Zea1 land next year was -made, the invita1 tion being made on the same, term s and | conditions as those for the last Indian j tour in 1935. If f o»r any reason the | Indian Federation is unable to send I a team, they will be asked for permis- | sion to negotiate with the Manavador | State team for a visit. The Prince of i Manavadar was to have captained the | team which visited New- Zealand in | 1935, but was unable to make the trip | because of illness. Hiis secretary, Macl- | sud, is captain of the State team and | was vice-captain of tho 1935 team.
