Harriers HASTINGS CLUB

'Fence.").

Two Strenuous Trial Runs NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

Havlng two long. and solid runs for the commencement of the season, members of the Hastings Harrier Club should have had a good start on which to "work up to form. With some shorter and faster runs during the; week, the majority should he in fair trim for te first Angus Cup race on May 15. At the, run from Tomoana freezing works some very difficult country was covered in the vicinity of the , river, and again near the finish, when a ploughed paddock was encountered. With the exception of one or two who have been taking part in the track events during the summer, the remainder clearly showed a lack of conditioh. First and "second respectively in the fast pack, Tod Taylor and George Ready, by their .fitness, proved the value of some track running during the summer, where both did well, Taylor winning the H.B.-P.B three-mile championship, and Ready the points cup in the mnning events in'the Hastings A.A..and C.C.

Fulfilling the premise shown by him last year, Alec Taylor led the medium pack home. The new runners who saw this run out are to .be complimented on their performance, and need not be discouraged if they found the going hard. Last Saturday 's run, held from the polo grounds, lacked interest owing to the flat and open nature of the country covered. With the pace on for the first four miles until ,a stiff hill was met with, and then a long run home again, everyone faded badly over the last ■' mile. Should Keep Specified Distance. Trail-layers . should v endeavour to make the run as near to the specified distance as possible. A runner expeeting a five-mile run sets his pace accordingly, with the result that if there is extra distance to be covered he is usually distressed for that extra distance. Tod Taylor again went well, and it is evident it will take a very fit man to relieve him of the club championship. Better form was shown on this run by B. Andersen. He will nesd to watch out or he will have to strika his colours to" some of the young runners this, year. Second in the medium pack, as in the previous week, Poppelwell appears to be in good fettle. With his phenomenal stride he should do well. Noticed showing promise among the new members are C. Fannin, D. GifEany and Bill Smith;

TJntil after tllb Angus Cup rdce it will be difficult to tell who's who, but judging by the materal rnnning the club should be able to put a good team in the field. To do this it is necesuary fot each club member to do his best by always giving his club his wholehearted support. Last but not least, do not forget some training, and then some more. ' After previous failures, it now appeara that the Thnrsday devision of the Hastings Harrier Club i3 an established fact. Among the runners seen out there is some likely material, "so there is no reason but that like the Saturday club they will grow from a small beginning to something greater. Programme for Month. May 8. — 5 . iniles, Showgrouhds (Packs). May 15. — Angus Cup 3 l-8m., ,raceconrse. May 22.— Club run, High SchdoL May 29,- — 6im. inter-club v. Napier, Hastings Raeecouree.
