(By Telegraph-

AUCKLAND, LaBt Night. The intense hardship suffered by tiu people was the outstanding impressiou formed by Dr. Duncan, Government Balneologist, during his visit to Italy On his return by the Niagara to-day Dr. Duncan said the sufferings of the Italian people. were indeed great. They were taxed to the utmost limit, but, strangely enough, taken on the whole, were fairly cheerful. The Mussolim regime was resented from the highest to the lowest. In respect of employment problems "the working xnan is asked to work four months in the year and the re- . maining months he is idle." Dr. Duncan said that in Germany he found an atmosphere of repression on every side. The younger people were definitely hypnotised by Hitler, but the older people were definitely unhappy under the present regime. Everywhere a military attitude was displayed, and there was no freedom of speech. Dr. Duncan said that he renewed acquaintance with Mr Bernard ' Shaw in England. Mr. Shaw said that if he could arrange his business affairs he would like to come to New Zealand to finish his days here.
