Driver Crawls Out Through Broken Windscreen

DANNEYIRKE, This Day. Mr J. Mclntrye, Raumati, lmd a fortunate escape from serious injury when the steering gear of his ear failed on Saturday af ternoon. He was driving from Dannevirke to his home about 4.30. On the slope by the Raumati dairy factory he found that the car was ndt responding to manipulation of the steering wlieel The road is narrow at this loeality and is flanked by gullies, The car slackened speed of its own accord,, and the driver decided to stop and locate the troubk. the vehicle came to a standstill, however, it toppled over the bank on the right side, falling a distance of seven or eight feet. It rolled completely over, and the driver crawled out through the smashed windscreen, his chief injury being a badly bruised left shoulder The mishap was caused through the rod connecting the front wheels becoming unfastened. As a resnlt, the steering apparatus worked only one of the wheels, and the other turned broadside on. Considerable damage was caused to the car.
