HOUSING SCHEME
To Begin in Hastings Next Month LOCAL PREFERENCE An intimation that a start with the Government housing scheme in Hastings would probabiy be made next month was given by Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P.? by the Member-in-Charge of Housing, Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., when in Wellington last week. * "Mr Lee told me that it was most likely tliat a start with the erection of the houses on the two blocks of land purchased recently would be made in June," said Mr Cullen to a Herald-Tri-bune representative this morning. "I also pressed further my representations that the construction of these houses should be undertaken by Hawke'g Bay builders and not- outsiders," he said, "and I was given an assurance that local builders will be given every opportunity and encouragement to tender for the work when tenders were called.'' Mr. Cullen said that it was thought that local builders would be able to compete quite easily with outside firms for the reason that they had the facilities on hand for the work, and would not have to pa.y heavy transport costs.
