THEFT AT WAIPUKURAU

Money and a Bicyclc Taken HANDBAG RIFLED A sum of.£17 io/- and a bicycle wero stolen in^ the early houts of Saturday morning from a house in Herbert street, Waipukurau. The money was the property of Miss Healean, of the Waipukurau Telephone Exchange, and the bicycle was the property of Mr. K, Field, the owner of the house. Miss Healean, who boards with Mr. and Mrs'. Field, placed her handbag eontaining the money on the dre!ssing table when she retired for the night at about 11.30 o'clock, and can vouch that it was not moved before 1 a.m., as she did not go to sleep before that time, and the light from a street lamp shines through the window into the bedroom, The dressing table is just inside the French window leading from the verandah, and the window is always left ' open, so that it would have been quite a simple matter for the thief to have' put his hand through the window and remove the bag. The bag itself was found lying on the verandah on Saturday at about 8 o'clock, but Mr. Field 's bicycle, which is usually left on the verandah at the spot where the bag was fbnnd, disappeared. Some keys and correspondence which had also been left in.the bag, were un» touched. — ►
