REFUSAL to SERVE ON COMMITTEE
Rivers Board Members Ddf Not Want to Act TOO LATE IN THE DAY Definite refusals to iorve on a committee were made by Messrs. W. G> Jarvis and J. 5. Sheath, two memberi of the H.B. Rivers Board, at to-day 's meeting of the board. Both membera regarded a request by the qhaircnan to serve on this partieular committee asbeing made rather late in the day. The incident ardse when the board was considering the appointment ef a committee to deal with the letting for grazing purposes of tho land between the riverbank froin Powdrell's bend to the Brookfields bridge. The chairman, Mr. C. Lassen, Mr. J. Macdonald, and L. E. Harris, were the members of the previous committee dealing v'th this cnatter. To-day Mi% Harris expressed his desire to xetire from this committee and Mr. G. Fairey was asked by the chairman if he w.ould be prepared to act in his stead. In reply, Mr. Fairey said that he might be prejudiced on the matter and would be prepared to see Mr. Jaryis act instead. "Will you act on this committee, Mr. Jarvis?" asked the chairman. "I hav© not been asked fo stand on any committee since this board was elected, and I think it is rather late? in the day now," said Mr. Jarvis. "Comoiittees have been appointed to act in my locality, but I have not been asked to take any part in them, 5 ' added Mf. Jarvis. Mr. Fairey then suggested that Mr. Sheath might serve on the committee. "Will you serve on the committee, Mr. Sheath?" asked the chairman. "I take up exaetly the same attitude as Mr. Jarvis," answer Mr. Sheath. "I have not previously been asked to serve on committees." "Mr, Talbot, will. you act on this eeoamittee?" asked the chairman. "Sooner than Mr. Talbot be asked to act, I will agree to go on the committee myself," said Mr. Fairey. ' "I want to point out to Mr. Jarvis that the committees are not set up by the chairman, but by the boaTd," explained the chainnan. "Yes, I know, but the ehainnan has a good say who is to be appointed," said Mr. Jarvis, "Mr. Sheath had every right to propoae you as a member of any of tho past committees if he had wanted to," said the chairman. "I didn't, because I knew it would be hopeless/' 'said Mr Sheath. "W® are not a lot of schoolbOys here," remarked Mr, Talbot, after wjiich the incident closed and the board passed on to the next business, Mf. Fairey agreeing to serve on tho •ommittee.
