Russian In Court After Car Smash

DUNEDIN, This Day. Thadee Slavensky, a member of the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet, appeared in the police court this morning jointly charged, in company with Maurico Ivendnick Whale, of Lyttelton, with being intoxicated in eharge of a car. The police stated that when the Russian accused was arrested at 6 p.m. yesterday, he was ab^olutely drunk. Whale hired a car and took his friend for a drive, and outside the Caledonian Hotel they crashed into a pole, both being dnjured and requiring some attention at the ho-spital. The Russian was driving when the accident ooenrred. Oounsel pointed out it was a disastrous drive for the Russian as his company left this morning - to catch a vessel for Australia, and Slavensky would have to fly to Wellington to catch the boat. Moreover, he received chest injuries which would affect his work. The Magistrate, taking into consider•jtdon the fact that the Russian was Weaving New Zealand, fined him £3. Whale was fined £10 witfi costs and his licence was suspended for six mpnths-
