Family's Lucky Escape at Gisborne

GISBORNE, Tbis Day. Awakened by a child sleepipg in the same bedroom at 11-45 o'clock last night, Mrs O'Meaghen, of Ralph street, was horrified to find the room filled with billowing smoke. Dashing into the hall, ehe discqvered that practically the whole house was in flames, which had not quite reached the other bedrooms, in which the five other children all of whom were under nine years, were sleeping, unaware that the buiiding was afire. en hurnedly shepherded them outside to safety in their night attire, but by the time she managed to get the youngsters out tne . hou^e was a mass of flames, and was quickly razed to the graund, in the absence of a water supply* The Fir© Brigade received a call by telephone, but as the fire was half a mile beyond the borougb boundary, and no water supply was available, the firemen were unable to respond.
