MUSICAL EVENING AT WAIPUKURAU
• The Central Hawke's Bay branch oi, the British- Music Society, hefid.'its, first monthly .concert for .the season ,on Thursday evening. in the social room of the Women V Best, Waipukurau. The rooms were' eharmingly - decorated with bowls ;of .br.onze chrysantjiouiuins, liquor umber and red . oak, and thb big log fires* in. the open firepiaces cre'ated a 'Very cheery atmospher'eV ' } There was a- very large atteridance of members, who thoroughly enjdyed the musical - programme presented by -a party of musicians from Napier, whicll had been • arranged by Miss D. Buckingham, who, unfortunately, was , unable to be present. Tho visitors were cordially welcomed by the chairwoman,' Mrs P. A. Biddiei who presented tho lady artists with choxce shoulder sprays.' The programme cpened with ' Sonata for violin and piano'? (Micheie Esposilo), played by Miss F. Fox and ' Miss VYiniiied McCar'thy. Miss "Fox also contributed the ■ ' violin solos ' ' Chanson ' Louis XI II. ' .' (Kreislet) , ' ' Slumber Spng" and' ' ' Ellentany ' ' | (Haydn Wood). Miss Helen Dykes sang "Sil'ent Noon" (Yaughan' Wiliiiuns), "Foiir ' Du-cks in a Po'nd" (Alina Ne'edham), "Lo'v'e Went ,& liiding ' >. (Frahk Biidgo), and' '.'Tlie Blackbird's. Song'' (Oyril.Scott). -Miss Winifred McCarthy played -the pianoforte solos* "Sonata'iu G" (Beetlioven), i 'To 'the Spring**" ' (Greig), ' ' Calais • de Lune" (Debussy) ahd ' 'Gopak' ' (Moussorgpky). • ' ; Mr H. C. Thompson ,sang 4' if AU the Young Maidens" (Hermann Lohr), "Best Thee, Sad Heart'"' (TereSa Del Diego), "O Tiiank Me Not" (MaUison), ."Devotioh" (Schumann).. MrCedrie White contributed the fiute , solos "Graceful Dance" (lemoce), 1 1 Reverie ' ' (Pergard) and ' '.Wiegculicd" (Salitha). The pianoforte acco.mpaniments. were played by Miss Winifred McCar.thy. • At the conclusion of • the. programme Mrs P. A. Biddle thanked the artists ior the very delightful programme presented. * She also drew the attention of members to the piano recently purchased, and solieited further donations towords tho cost of providing the -Central Hawke's -Bay -.branch. with its own instr.ument.
