Art Scholarship Won By Man. Who Kept Up Trade Job
ADELAIDE. — Doing commercial work so that he could continue his are studies, John Douglas Welsh of Glenelg, has won Boutii Australia's lirst travel-'. ling art scholarship. Now he will be able to spend two years abroad. Mr Welsh worked hard for the scholarship. Immedialely the condltions were announced last June ho set to work, giving up all recreation and entertainment. As the closing dale drew near, ho worked day and-night. , He completed his last portrait at 3 a.m. on the day entries were due. There wero 12 entrants for the scholaTship, including three women. The age limit was 28 and the competitors were required to submit six examples of their work. The ' judging was in the capable hands of Hans Heysen, cminenc Australian Januscape painter, James Quinn, whose f amo has spread abroad, and the direetor of the National Gallery of South Australia, Louis McCubbin.
