SPRINGBOKS' CAPTAIN

The selection of L Nel as captain. of the South African Rugby team recalls the fact that this country and also Great Britain and New Zealand favour the selection of a forwaxd to lead an overseas team on tour. When tiie Springboks were here in 1921 Theo Pienaar, a forward, was in charge. The British teams which toured New Zealand in 1903, 1908, and 1930, were eaptained respectively by D. R. Redell-Sivright, A. F. Harding, and F. D. Prentice, all forwards. All Black teams Of 1905, 1924, 1928 and 1935 were led by forwards or wingforwards, as follows: D. Gallaher, C. G. Porter, M. I. Brownlie and J. E. Manchester. The Australian policy is favourable to backs and the names of S. J. Maleolm, A. G. Wallace, J. Morgan, W. A. Walker, C, Towers and others come readlly to mind.
