ARTS AND CRAFTS CIRCLE MEETING

Mrs Bryant, deputy-leader of the arts and crafts circle.of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild, presided at tbo monthly meeting which was held in the W.P.F.U. r'ooms. The ^ secretary, Mrs A . C- A- Hyde was also present, and »bout 45 members and friends, several new members being welcomed. A roll-call, "Home Hints" was answered by'all present and some very useful hints were gleaned. Mrs McKay, a member of the circle, fchen gave a very interesting demonstration on covering a box with cretonne, a box that was finished being shown and much admued. Each step iii the making was ciearly shown and pod-ets were placed inside for holding •odds and e,nds. These boxes should appeal to brides-to-he as a most useful gtory box- ■ Mr» Dalton then instructed member# in the art of hair-pin work and made a niat for a-duchess set, this"- appearing very. easy when accomplished by such. nimble fingers. • Both demonstrators; were accorded a hearty vote -of . thafiks for their useful and iustructive lessons.. - - There were six entaies xn the competition for a preseuthtion bouquet and all were most beautifully made. The jiidge, Mrs C. Clark, who- gave a de. moustration on bouquet-makmg tlie provjous- .month and also generously dojiated two prizes, had dilficulty in making her awai'ds, and afterwards gave a most instructive and friendly criticism as to why she made her decision} thig proving most helpful to the exhibitots. Mrs R. Campbell and Mrs J. Taylor tied for first place, Mrs Campbell feceiving a crystal boivl and Mrs Taylor a decorated pot and Mrs Rood was placed third. Mrs Clark was thanked for her talk and i'or kindly donatingi the prizesThe Mn> roll-eall will be "suggestions for future programmes" and a competition for six plain oven econes willbe held beside the demonstration on smocking- It has been deeided in futfire to hold a bring-and-buy stall each month to aid the circle funds.
