Eliminating Dangers on Main Roads

WELLINGTON, This Day. An outline of the progress made xu connection with the elimination of dangerous railway crossings was given by the Minister of Public Worke, the Hon. B. Semple in an interview to-day. "Of the 250 crossings selected for elimination on main highways, nine have been completed," he stated. "Fifty-nine contracts have been let, Und the work is in hand. Two further tenders have been called and proposalsare ready for the .calling of ten more. "Sixty-eight proposals are in the course of preparation, and surveys and foundation investigations are in hand for 45, making a total of 193. "In 126 cases, elimination is being done by means of an overbridge, 50 by highway deviation and 17 by subways. This progress must be regarded as highly satiefactory, considering the high pressure at which tho officers under my control are working," concluded the Minister.
