DECORATION ARCHES

ANOTHEE

SHOPKEEPEK.

(To the Editor.) Sir, — A correspondont who signs himselr "Business Man" asks you in to night 's xjaper if you or any of yoar I'oadets cfcn tell bim what has happencd to tbe arches which decorated our street during the last carnival held in Hastings. Upon inaking inquiries you wero tohi that ' ' they have been disintegrated." I looked up ' ' Webster's" and they

interpret it thus: Disintegrate — v.t., to break np into component • parts by mechanised or atmospheric agency; v.i., to seperate. ' ' You were truthfully answered, Mr Editor, and the agency was mechanised and not atmospheric. On being appfoached a short time back for my propartion of costs (yes, Mr Editor, proportion— «not snbscription) towards the proposed Coronation decorations, I asked what had happened to the arches, and the collector said, " What! those! They were chopped up long ago," I know that they may have elashed with Mr Chaplin's Coronation decorative scheme, but I do think that if they had been cared for, they would have been of great use to ueo for the forthcoming festive season, and consequently no tiee'd for the costly scheme now being forced upon us. It is td be regretted that a little more carre was not taken wTith the arches as many shopkeepers contributed toward the cost of same when they could ill alford it. — Yours, etc.,

Hastings, April 28.
