Thousands of excited people thronged the streets of Cairo on Easter Saturday to witness the passing of the Holy Carpet from Mecca, an annual event which causes great excitement. Each year the carpet is taken to the tomb of Mahomet at Mecca, and its return journey, over a distance of three hundred miles, occupies a month, ending in a procession through Cairo to the Citadel, where the historic carpet is deposited.
