WELLINGTON, Last Night. The personnel of the Barley Advisory Committee was announced to-night by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin. The Minister recalled that, in a statement made in November last, he expressed a desire for the Government to give effect to the proposals for the improvement of the barley industry and indicated that an advisory committee would be set up to assist the Government in this direction. The personnel of the committee has now
been dccided as.follows: — Messrs R. B. Tennent (Department of Agriculture), chairman); R. T. McMillan (Leeston), H. H. Gifford (Blenheim), growers' representatives; J. H. Hewlett (Christchurch), A. B. Duncan (Christchurch), maltsters' representatives; J. M. Smith (Department of Agriculture, Dunedin). "In mahing this announcement I wish to mahe it perfectly clear there is no intention on the part of the Government of controlling the industry," said the Minister. "Its aim is rather that any improvements which may be effected will be brought about ■ by voluntary co-operation within the industry itself. Eepresentation on the advisory "committee of growers ' and maltsters should facilitate putting into operation improved practices and I, confidently anticipate the work of the committee will be of outstanding value to the industry." The first meeting of the' committee iwill be held at an early date.
