SPANISH WARFARE Bombardment oi Civilian Population BRITAIN CONCERNED

"Hia Majesty's Government deeply deplores the bombardment of the civilian population in tbe Spablsh citil war, wherever it mai' occur and wfcoever muy be respoasible. The Government will continue to examine whether further ttepe are possible to prevent a recurrence of such depiorable events.' * This ztatwnent waa made in tho Hottse of Commons by ihe Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, in ane* wer to m question by private notice by tio Leader of the Opposition arising out of reports of ihe- aerial bombardment on Honday by Spanisb insurgent aeroplanes of Guernica.
Large numbers of supplementary questions followed Mr. Eden's answer. Some wero inspired by partisan sympathy for one side or the other, but all showing profound horror at the erueltiee whieh continuation of the civil war is inflietlng on numberless innocent Spaniards in territories on both sides. Mr. Eden reiterated the regret of tho Government at the bombing of civilian'B and ite desire to see an end pnt • to it by n greemont between the two sides in Spain.
