Ouce upon a time the ancienb house waa frequented by a, host of celebrities including Dr Samuel Johnston, whose' favouriLe seat is pointed out fb this day. Upstairs i.s the quaint smoke-room. with its loiig table and array of "ekurchwarden" clay pipes. Ilcre the wits and men oi letters wero want to eongregate, and much tobaeco was consumed, but whether the quality aiiproachcd tba« of some of our modem tobaccos — notably "toasted" — is very much open to auestion. Tho five (and only genuine) toasted brands, Cut Plug No 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy Cut No 3 (Bulldog), Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, have everything to recominend them. Not only are they of the first quality but practically liarmless owing to the elimination of the hicotine in them By toasting — the manufacturers' own. proeess.
