OBITUARY

MR. PETER CHAAFE Mr. Peter Chaafe, aged 63, who died at Hamilton on Saturday, was formerly . one of Auckland 's leading trainers. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. John Chaafe, at one time a prominent trainer at 'Ellerslie and then for many years in charge of Ihe late Hon. J. D. Ormond 's thoroughbred stud at "Karamu," Hastings. He followed his father's calling and was best known for the success he. achieved as trainer of Blue Jacket, winner of the Great Northern Derby in 1899, of the Auckland Cup in 1899 and 1900. He won several other important races, the well-known steeplechaser Nor'West, being one of his string. In recent years he had retired from aetive training, but for a while was associated with Mr. A. Winder at Te Rapa. During the past two years h» had been an inmate of the Waikato Hospital His wife, one son and two daughters survive him and also brothers in Hastings.
