WOODVILLE, Last Night. A sensational incident in which a senior Woodville player struck the referee, Mr A. Ward, a police constable stationed at Palmerston Northi, marked the opening of the Manawatu Rugby Cnion's competitions on Saturday. Constable Ward was struck twice — on the right cheek, from which some skin was removed ,and on the chin. The game was a senior fixture at Woodville between St. Patrick's, Palmerston North,, and Woodville. ' The player concerned. was warned by the referee and the incident followed a subsequent order to leave the field. It is understood that Constable Ward is not laying 'a charge of assault against the man who struck him, as he prefers that he be dealt with by the Rugby Union management committee on Tuesday evening. St. Patrick's won the match by 30 points to three.
