ANZAC DAY NOT A HOLIDAY
Should Not be Regarded As a Play-Day MR MADDISON'S APPEAL An appeal to not only returned soldiers but to everyone to observe Anzac Day in the true spirit, that is as a Sunday ahd a day of reverence and not as a holiday, was made by the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, at the complimentary tea tendered to members of tbe Hastings Returned Soldiers' Association yesterday afternoon on the occasion of ihe attainment by the association of its 21st birthday. "I am particularly perturbed as to the future pbservance of Anzac Pay3" said Mr Maddison, "I do most sincerely and earnestly hope that it will ; be looked upon as a .Sunday and not as a play-day.'' Mr Maddison went on to point out that in certain industrial labour awards provision was being ancluded for obsCrving. Anzac Day, when it fell on a Sunday, on the day following, this being in the nature of a etatutovy holiday, "It say that when provision was made in the Act for the observanee of Anzac Day dt was made so that it was a Sunday, and was to be oWerved as a day of reverence and sacredness. It is quite contrary to the spirit of Anzac that it should be treated as a holiday, as it wonld be if included in awards as it is proposed it should be# "I appeal to you all not tb commdt, or allow this sin against the reverence and gaeredness of Anzac Day as -if js. now looked npon, ' ' he declared, and. from the applause that followed it waa Obvious that he had the full support and endorsement of those present.
