MISS ROE
The passing of Miss Roe, for several years matron of the Girls' Friendly Society Hostel at Wanganui and a woman with a Great War record of over five years, will be regretted by a wide circle of friends in various parts of New Zealand. Miss. Roe died at Napier on. Sunday, April 18. Born in Galway, Ireland, where her father had estates, Miss Roe was* left an orphan at an early age, and took up nursing duties in Dublin. She was in fean Francisco when the Great War broke out and immediately returned to Ireland, serving as a V.A.D. in the Earl of Mayo's Military Hospital and also in the Monkstow'n Convalescent Hospitai, where her work for some five years endeared her to those with whom she caxne in contact. In 1920 Miss Roe came out to New Zealand, being for some time matron at Scots ' College,' Wellington. Later she came to Wanganui and was for several years matron at tha Girls' Friendly Society Hostel, aftervvards was temporary matron in charg«* of the Technical College Hostel. More recently Miss Roe had occupied a position as matron at the Girls? Friendly; Society Hostel at Napier. A noted hockey player in Ireland, Miss Roe was a member of the seleor tion committee for All Ireland at the time when she decided to come out to New Zealand, and she retained her in* terest in hockey during the years she Was resident in New Zealand. She was a keen supporter of the Wanganui branch of the League of Nations Union, and had on several occasions addressed meetings on league topics. She was also interested in the Wanganui Repertory Theatre. ■ ■ -
