CORONATION WEEK

Celebrations By, Hastings Shops RETAILERS' VIEWS The celebration of 'the Coronation and an.Empire Shopping Week, commenoing on May 10, was discussed at a meeting of the Hastings Eetailers' 4ssociation on Wednesday night. The secretary, Mr H. R. Freneh, reported that he had waited on the British Trade Commiesioner and ^amples of posters available for window displays were available for distribution. The action of the executive was approved. One retailer asked why he and others iiad received a request for- 1/6 a foot of his f rontage for Coronation decorations without an opportunity to discuse whether- such should be done and how should be done. The chairman, Mr C. Griffiths, said the plan for decorating the town in a uniform manner was not the proposal jf the Eetailers' Association. That was due to the initiative of the Mayor, who Jeserved commendation for his action. Alj interested had been publicly invited to attend a public meeting. Just as in retailers' meetings^ notice had proved insufficient and a personal canvass had to be made to seeure attendance of a auffioient number to carry on. on the motion of Mr J. F. Jones, seconded by' Mr E. A. Westorman, it was decided to thank the Mayor for his initiative. Mr Bradshaw asked whether the decorations decided upon were to be of British or foreign manufacture. It would be peculiar to have an Empdre Shopping Week with Japanese adornments* Oth\r speakers expressed the view that sufficient British cloth could not be obtained of right colours, or dyed to secure what was wanted, it would be better to curtail the decorations rather than use anything elsn than British. The chairman agreed to discuss the question with the Mayor.
