Distress Signals Shown To Be Trawler's Lights WELLINGTON REPORT
IBv
WELLINGTON, This Day. The floodlights nsed by a trawler, probably the Nora Niven, for hauling in the cateh at night are believed to have been mistaken for distress signals that were reported to have been seen oft Kekerangu last night. Considerable anxiety and activity on the part of shipping shd other officials was caused last night and this morning when a report was' reeeived that a vessel was in distress. The Post and Telegraph Department first reeeived advice that a steamer of considerable size was in distress at 9.30 last night, abont six miles south, offshore, from Kekerangu. At 9.55 another steamer was Teported to be standing by the disabled vessel, but the information was not definitely certain on the point. The weather was clear and the sea cairn. A Blenheim report stated that Mr Trolove, of Kekerangu, reported that it appeared that the disabled vessel was moving slowly southwards, probably being teadered by a small vessel, which apparentlv arrived about 9 o'cldck, but it was diffieult to state aeeurately what was happeniing.
