New Prison Methods Cut Goal Population
ADELAIDE.— There is a marked deerease in the number of prisoners in the iargest Adelaide gaol and this has been attributed to the improved economic conditions, increasing use by courts of the probationary system, and the provision of unemployment relief. The South Australian authorities are extending the parole system at every ! opportunity and definite efforts are also being made in prison to give mon and women a better outlook by more considerate treatment such a3 teaching them trades, paying small bonuses for services and rewards for good behaviour, and ameliorated conditions on parole in the Kyema prison camp in the hills. This camp provides work in clearing and improving land and the meh are under greatly modified restraint. Each lives in a separate hut with unbarred doors, and the few. instances of escapes indicate how well the men have merited the trust placed in them. In all the South Australian prisons there is generous provision for recreation, and reading is encouraged by ' a supply of selected literature. Newspapers with undesirable passages blackened out are made available.
