WOODVILLE NOTES
Course in Great Order for Next Week YESTERDAY'S WORK Becent arrivais have brought the number of horse# in work at Woodville up to about forty, and the track work is becoming increasingly interesting. There was not much galloplng yesterday, however, and the horses that were apeeded up did not hother about breaking the watches. The course proper, which is in wonderfully good order for the Dannevirke meeting next week, was available and the trestltes were about thirty feet out from the rails. Bruce McKay, who'arrived in Woodville last week, has a string of five horses. Tihey are Master Hector, Marjory Daw, Gaelie Song, Given and Hunting Tartan. First out pn the track yesterday morning was Haut Monde, who, with N. CaVaney in the saddle, was given : an easy seven furlongs, being speeded | up to run the last three furlongs in 38. His next race is to be the Hawke's Bay Cup and he looks to be in splendid order - and none the worse for his races at 'Manawata. Mnln. and Golden Treasure, who leave ,for Australia nearly next month, wero ;Out doing pace work. Maia looks a better colt than he did last year and onee over the Tasman it sihould" not take long to get him back into racing trim. j Golden Treausure moved a bit acratch | ily in his work but, it is understood, | he is rather inclined that way. , ; | B'rown Oak was worked on the trial j grass, being speeded up a bit towards j i the post. Brown Oak was pulling hard j and looks well. 1 Mandamus, after a slow beginning, j came home ihe last three of a six furlong flutter in 38 1-5, finishing very Emoothly. Mandamus is another candi-i date for the Hawke's Bay Cup. He is! also entered for the Dannevirke meet-j ing but it is reported iho is an .unlikely starter. Ythan was restricted to a couple of! xounds of strong pace woik on the; plough. He looks well and has been' jumping well and he may be worth keeping in mind. Eoyal Mimic looks none the. worse for, his winning efforts at Manawatu. Since that meeting the has been over the country a couple of times. He did not do badly bnt still has something to learu about steeplechasing. The Hunting Song tw.o-year-old, Rana, looks a good sort. He is improving all the time and more may be heaxd of him.
Gaelic Song (Gilmour) was worksd on the course proper. The daughter of Piuthair was not under pressure to the straight but she sprinted the last two furlongs in fine style. Huntette, First Chapter, Otaki and Hunting Mars were worked on tho plough. ' It is said that Hunting Mars ' might he tried as a jumper later on. Collision and Black Thread were also ' worked on the plough, but Marjory Daw (Cavaney) and Hunting Tartaa (Gilmqur) were sprinted three furlongs on the course proper, being timed to cut the distance out iu 37. K Marjory Daw ludicated tihat she is new to lefthanded going and she hung out a bit coming down the straight. Courtcraft, looking a picture of health, was given easy exercise on the plouglh. Nothing definite-has been announced in regard to next season 's programme for this colt. An addition to Fred Davis' string is ! tho rluing three-year-old, Epping, who i is by Hunting Song out of Fintry.and I related to Gold Rod. Epping has been gelded and he looks big and well. Jack Sullivan's unnamed rising three-year-old by Thomond, witih M. Casey. up, sprinted three furlongs in 36 4-5. He is a niee mover. Colleen Gain ( Gilmour j was only doing her bfest over the last bit and shs was timed to run three furlongs in 40 1-5. time she could easily 'haVe improved upon. Solaria (Gilmour), wtho does not look right yet, moved rather seratchily iu cutting out half a mile in 53 1-5. Given (Cavaney) and Rioghail (Rohloff) were the only ones to gallop over a mile and Rioghail was tihe best part of a length to the good at tho post. They were not required to do bettcr than 15 to the furlong for half a mile and they eompleted in 1.54. M. Lane has a niee looking youngster by Gainscourt which will race aa Erin?s Court. Frfed Davis has a rising two-year-oid by Colossus cut of Tiff Mint, related to Gay Talkie on ths dam's side.
