j WELLINGTON, Last Night. j i Members . of the newly-establishedi Bureau of Social Science and Research, |Were welcomed to the inaugural meet'ing to-day by Hon. D. G. Sullivan. It was explained that the. Bureau would f unction as a committee of the Council of Scientifie and Industrial Research with direct xesponsibility to the Minister and it was the Government's desire to apply tp social research somefhing of jthe same sort pf organisation as applied in those fields of reseaTch aiready con-j |stitute,d. The Minister said the task of deve-, Uoping and directing the new org&nisa-. tion dealing with probleana hitherto deemed sqarcely worthy of scientifie treatmeni at all was by no means easy., [Yet he felt confident, in view of the wide and varied knowledge of members. of the committee, that the results pro-. duced would be invaluable to the Gov-t ernment and the community. A prohlem in which they wero allt vitally interested was that of the stan-l dard of living of various sections of thej people, and, in view of the importancei in the national economy of the dairy; lindustry and the difficulties facing it, it had heen proposed that a" survey of the standard of living of dairy farmers should he made. In view of the Government's poliey and the condition of the dairy indnstry it was important they sh'ould base. their decisions on scientifically estabHshed faots ahd that they he ready and able to remedy any defects which might be noted so that ultimately they piight raise the qtandjard of living not ohly of dalry farmers ibut of the whol.e community to -the highest possible level. It was oue . of jthe taska of the Bureau to attempt to irender assistance to the community by dnvestigations of that nature. The Bureau was engaged thronghout ithe day on general discussions of methods by which the aims and objeets coUld be translated into practical pro•jects.
