The Australian Associated Press political writer says: "With characteristic orthodOxy, Mr Chamberlain began surveying the revenue and expenditure before ftn unexpeetant and unexcited Souse, but the speeeh was only threequarters concluded when the House, exeepting Labour members, were so stunned that the Government benches cOuld not ntter a cheer. The general verdict was that, excluding the meat dtttieS, Mr Chamberlain 's Budget was brilliant Socialism, which the Labour members vociferously confirmed by repeated cheers. "Several Labour members eaid afterwards that their own party could not have introdueed a better Bndget. "The national defence dontribution fax was a well-kepfc secret. Conservatives unhesitafingly expressed the opinion that their Prime Minisfer-elect had imposed a drastie tax on industry the repercussions of which will be widespread. They consider that the measure marks a substantial advance towards the redistribution of capital.
