DCG By "THE EELVBiv. A Wanganui exchange says that Collodion is to race at Woodville next Saturday. He will take on the sprint event the firet day and perhaps be tried over a mile and a distance on the second day. The gelding has gone on the right way since Easter and appears to be a better horse now than ever. • # • Master Norval, states the same writer, has been given some sprinting recently, and the way he has been hitting out suggests that he is likely tc show after a race or two that he still retains much of his former speed. It is likely O. Gordon will try him on the fiat before putting him over hurdles, at which game the gelding should do well * # * Susan, who got on the winning list by her success in the Junior Stakes at Whangarei on Saturday, is a four-yeat-old mare by Acre from Lady Lois. She is owned by N. A. Winder and trained by him at Te Hapa- • * * The successes registered by Ajax in the Sires' Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes at Randwick during the Easter racing, netted his owners £4350 in stakes. This is just about as much as Royal Chief and Francis Drake together secured with 10 wins and several placings during their season' s racing -in New Zealand. # # *
The Day Comet gelding Streamline is^ being schooled over fences at Riccarton and should make a good addition to the ranks of 'chasers. Last season he won over hurdles at Timaru, both the brush hurdles at the Riccarton autumn meeting, and finished third to Black Marlin and Ruaform in the Trentham Hurdles. He is a halfbrother to Waterline. # * • L- J. Ellis arrived at Riccarton on Thursday morning and later was a visitor to the tracks. He stated that, althougih his eyesight failed completely in his affected right eye during his stay in a private hospital in Melbourne, it is now almost fully restored. Acting on medical advice, however, Ellis do.es not expect to ride again for three or four months. K. Yoitre, according to Ellis, is now able to go about Melbourne with the aid of a stick, but he also will not be fit to resume his profession for another three months. # • • The novice jumper Backblock, who has been shaping well in his schooling tasks at Ellerslie, injured one of his forelags rtcently through over-reach-ing|. He has had to be eased in his preparation.> Backblock ranks as a half-brothe/ to Fre© Air, a- good pecformer over hurdles «nd steeplechase' countr^ a few seasons ago, and whvn Jie ha» had the necessary experie".r,o I he should pay his way as a jumper.
