HARRIER RACING
Opening of Napier Season On Saturday last under wintry conditions the opening of the 1937 Napier harrier season took place, the Mayor, Mr O. O. Morse, formally declaring the season open and starting' about 45 runners on their first official run. Commencing at the Kennedy Park camping ground, the trail led along Kennedy road extension and then doubled baek to Richmond Block, along Geddis Avenue till Riverbend road was reaehed and followed around this to the river bank. The bank was then followed and the river-bed crossed at the baek of the Boys ' High School, from whence it led to George 's Drive and thns to Kennedy road bridge and the camping ground. Although rain was prevalent throughout, the run was qnite enjoyable. The runners and their friends were then entertained to afternoon tea, kindly provided by the Mayor and Mayoress. The Mayor welcomed the visiting harriers from Hastings and mentioned the loss they had sustained in the transfer of Mr C. Wright from the district, _but he knew that this would not deter them in„ the least. Messrs Robertson and B. Anderson replied on behalf of Hastings. Thanks were extended by Mr Hatch, the Napier captain, and all the members to the -ladies who so willingly assisted during the afternoon. x Judging by the number of runners who turned out both at Hastings and Napier the prospects for the coming season are andeed bright. Although numerieally Hawke's Bay is well dOwn the list, the runners this season compare( jfavourably with any In New Zealand
