HASTINGS TRACK GOSSIP

"The Barb.")

(Bj

"Murrum" asks how many raceh Pakanui won last season on end and where. It was in the summer of 1936 that Pakanui was sent on the East Coast circuit and at hia first meeting, Wairoa, he ran third to. Contact and Greenore the iirst day and on tlie st-cond also started in a hack event. On to Gisborne he ran second the iirst day to Hunting Mars and next day commenced his sequence of eight winis by winning a hack race, carrying 7.12 and beating Hunting Mars and Small Boy. At Tologa Bay, with 7.12 in an open race, he beat Good Hunting and Malapeit the first day and on the second, carrying 9st., won from Huntette afid Double Ace. Brought back home, he won a double at Napier Park, carrying 7.12 and beating Contact, 9.0, and Greenore, 7.12, the first day and on the second day, under 8.10, accounting for Sybil Song and Maine. Taken to Wellington, he won another double, beating Grateful and Erua the first day and the following day Winning from Ohief Ranger and Hunting Mars. His eighth successive win was achieved at the H.B.J.C. autumn meeting. J. Forsyth xode him at Tologa Bay, but in the .other events P. Atkins was his pilot. * * * Lone Spear, in V. H. Colello's stable, is on the improve. He has been given ample time to come right and, being a clever fencer showing sign's of stamina, this Greyspear geldins: should win over the country. He has been placed on the private sale list. * * • Geo. Greene ie breaking in a handsome colt of his own by Laughing Prince from the Lord Quex maro Moa Bird. He is the first of the Quantock horse's progeny to be handled in this district, but Mrs.". H. E. Connop will be very soon placing i.nto work a filly by the same horse from Mercian Prince 's dam, Royal Song. m a ji.

w w w J. Hall has just completed the initial education of a two-year-old goldiug by Gainscourt-Matatane, the property of Mrs. H. M. Campbell. The newcomer is well grown, and, on conformation at any rate, ehould be at home on a racecourse.

• • * The progeny of Lord Quex fared wcli at the recent Manawatu meeting where he was represented by Haut Monde, Corroboree, Mister Qaex and Catalogue. As a begetter of wmners no sire has a better record in New Zealand for the same time at the stud. He has got winners of all classes of races, claesics, w.f.a., cups, sprints, hurdle and ^teeplechases and, judging by his crop of youngstera at present running out at 'Flaxmere, his record will be greatly added to within the next few y^are. # # • Mr. H. D. Greenwood, of Canterbury, is at present residfing at HaveloJeii North so no doubt will be present at the forthcoming H.B. Jubilee Cup meeting next month, and it is quite possible one or two of his horses, including Lofty, will race at that meeting. The name of Greenwood brings back the great race staged at Hastings in 1925 between Gloaming and The Hawk in the Ormond Gold Cup, when the H.B.J.C. was enabled to eclipse all its other totalisator records. . • * • H. S. Greene is breaking in a handsome colt by Beau Peye from La Moderne,t held by many to be one of the most promising youngsters seen in this district for many a day. He is the property of his breeder, Mr. A. F. Symes. • • * • The same trainer has for Mr. T. H. Lowry a two-year-old by Night Raid from Oreum, thus claiming as a close relative Mr. E. J. Watt's highly peformed colt, Gold Rod. . " " « # * • Trainer J. M. Cameron has returned to Hastings from Sydney, bringing back with him a yearling filly by Marconigram, sirfi' of last season 's Melbourne Cup winner, Maribou, and of Contact, winner of the -1936 Sydney Cup. The filly was purchased by Cameron on behalf of a well known Hastings sportswoman. • « • Pladie's best in the Nelson Cup on Saturday was second to Davistock, who had not won a race for over twelve months. Pladie was expected by Hastings track watchers to have done better, but the trip and the race will do him good. • * # The three-year-old, Wagner (Siegfried — Polonaise), owned by Mr. R. JI. W. Holden, was on Monday sent down from here to join np with L. Wilson's Awapuni stable, where Chat, also the property of Mr. Holden, is likewise located. • • • Mention was made in the Herali.lTribune last week of a petition originuting from the Taranaki district anent an allowanee for apprentice jockeys to be placed before the N.Z. Racing Conference. The H.B. Breeders, Owners and Trainers' Association has now taken this matter in Land. The first meeting o±" this newly-formed association will be hold on Thursday next in the Hastings raceuours,e tea kiosk at 8 p.m., when all interestcd are invited to attend. Other iniportant matters will also bo doalt with. • • • Theje was a little fast work on the Hastings traeks on Saturday morniug, when most of the work was done on the plough track. • • * • Padishah (B. Stowc) and Lacquer (C Stratton) ran homo from tlie five furlong post in 05secs., but Padishah conlinuud for onco round (o ruu tllat distance in 1.43. * # * Marsya (H. Murray) sprinted half a mile in 524 without being fully extended. This» gelding has but one win to his credit, but is a likely sort of hack to pod up any day nbw. , .

The two-year-old Lindrum came home down the straight to run the two furlongs in about 26secs. He is a neat little galloper. * • • Ambusian (B. Stowe) and Moa Ace (M. Murray) registered 51 for half a mile. The former is decidedly on thc improve and in him Mr. Ian Henderson should have a useful performer and ono likely to get out of the novi.ce class, before the end . of the season. » • « Holios (B. March) was too good for the steeplechaser Wykemiet (J. Campbell) in a short sprint. • « # Parry (B. Stowe) and Contact ( J. McNaughton) were companions in a sixfurlong gallop do%e In 1.16J, very fair time. The latter will race in the hurdle ovents at the Jubilee meeting at Hastings next month. * ' * .* Pakanui (P. Atkins) pleased by galloping twice round the plough impr8ssively in 1.40J. He is to be prepared for the H.B. Jubilee Gold Cup. ik £t ' *

Lavina, who has been having an easy time eince winning at the Waipukurau meeting, was under restraint when running three furlongs in a shade better thau 39secs. • * • The , two-year-old Leonthus (H. Callinan) took 71 to do five furlongs, while the Lapidary — Lady Hill filly (R. March) did her three in 40. • » • Soho (R. March) and Peter Beckford (P. AtAkins) got to the end of half a mile in 50£. To date Soho has been nothing much more than a fair hack, but the manner in which he has improved this last mcinth or so suggests that he will not be long before he wins a fair middle distance open race. He is very fit at present and, although he is not the equal to Peter Beckford over a sprint distance, he went most pleasingly on Saturday morning. He will be Mr. Beatson 's repreeentative in the H.B. Jubilee Gold Cup.
